Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)

What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)?

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a hands-on, Montessori-based approach to faith formation for children. Rooted in Scripture and the liturgy of the Church, CGS invites children into a prayerful relationship with God through work, silence, and wonder.  At the heart of CGS is the belief that children already have a deep connection with God. In a carefully prepared space called the Atrium, children work with beautiful, child-sized materials that help them reflect on Scripture stories, the life of Jesus, and the meaning of the Mass. Rather than being “taught,” children are guided to discover and respond to God’s love in their own way.

Key features of CGS:

  • The Atrium: A peaceful, retreat-like space designed for prayer and discovery.
  • Hands-on materials: Miniature altars, liturgical items, parables, and maps of the Holy Land help children enter into the mysteries of our faith.
  • Child-centered: Children choose their work and return to it often, fostering concentration, independence, and personal prayer.
  • Catechist role: The adult prepares the environment, presents simple lessons, and then steps back to let the child encounter God directly.

CGS is currently offered in our pastorate for children ages 3-5.  Classes are held at St. Thomas More in Brookings at the following times:

  • Tuesdays at 9:00 am
  • Wednesdays at 3:30 pm
  • Wednesday at 6:00 pm
