ANOINTING OF THE SICK

"By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them.  And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ."

- Catechism of the Catholic Church 1499

In this sacrament of healing, the hands and forehead are anointed with oil that has been blessed and prayed over by our bishop at the annual Chrism Mass.  This anointing is most commonly administered by a priest during times of serious or chronic illness.  This anointing is also administered to prepare a Christian to pass over from this world into eternal life as their earthly life is drawing to a close.

If you or someone you know is in need of anointing, please call the St. Thomas More office at 605-692-4361 to make an appointment with a priest.
