HOLY COMMUNION

"At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood.  This he did in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved Spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet 'in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.'"

- Catechism of the Catholic Church 1323

First Holy Communion for 2nd Graders

Traditional preparation for First Holy Communion takes place in the 2nd grade after having received First Reconciliation.  Preparation is done in religious education classes and also at home with materials provided by the parishes.    First Communion Masses are usually held the first weekend of May.  Please contact your parish's director of religious education for dates of parent meetings and when preparation will begin.

First Communion for those older than 2nd Grade

Children older than 2nd Grade are able to participate in traditional preparation for First Holy Communion through our religious education program with the permission of the pastor and director of religious education of the parish where the preparation will take place.  For more information please email Evan at discipleship@stmbrookings.org.

High school-aged students and adults desiring to receive First Communion do preparation through OCIA (the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults).  Those preparing through OCIA will receive their First Communion at the Easter Vigil.  For more information on OCIA, click here.
